The Wash in Galloway Township was chosen Best of The Press for six years in a row.
For over 15 years The Wash in Galloway Township has been a community staple for those who like that “new car” feel. Owner Peter Sarabella dedicates himself to not only keeping the business successful, but also ensuring customers get a true car wash experience. This dedication earned The Wash another Best of the Press Award for the sixth year in a row.
“I just want to thank my customers, for patronizing me and their loyalty over the years. It’s made my business grow,” Sarabella said. “Our slogan used to be ‘it’s not just a wash, it’s an experience’ and I tried to keep that going you know, even though you don’t come into the place.”
During COVID, many industries took a hit because of public safety precautions and the lack of traveling due to stay-at-home orders. When things opened back up, Sarabella was concerned about keeping the customer experience a top priority at The Wash.
“We used to be a full-service where people would pay and you would walk through the lobby and we would have free coffee. People wanted to walk through the lobby and actually watch their car being washed.” Sarabella said.
The Wash now invites the customers to stay in their cars and enjoy the new LED lights and colorful soaps that keep the process interesting for customers. Additionally, there are now pay stations instead of cashiers and sanitizing services being offered.
Another challenge Sarabella saw was how weather patterns affected business, but he’s combated this by giving customers flexible wash dates.
“When it rains we’re not working, when it’s snowing we’re not working. But now we have this new membership thing,” Sarabella said of a new program they started to allow customers to wash their car everyday if desired.
In addition to The Wash, Sarabella owns other locations such as The Wash Express in Absecon and MGM Car Wash in Egg Harbor Township. For now, his focus is to make these three the best they can be.

For the fourth year in a row, America’s oldest roadside landmark and Margate’s beloved Lucy the Elephant has won the Best of the Press award for the Best Landmark.
Director Richard Helfant has been involved with the historic structure since 2000, but has been inspired by Lucy for decades. Helfant works diligently to show others the magic of Lucy despite the challenges that occur as time passes.
“I’ve been involved with Lucy since seventh grade. So I started selling candy to raise money for her restoration and to save her from a wrecking ball.” Helfant said.
Back then, his teacher and mentor, Mr. Julius Woods, was one of the founders of the Save Lucy committee and encouraged students to sell baked goods to support the monument. Nowadays, the sense of community has deteriorated and Lucy doesn’t have as many volunteers.
“But today, our fundraising is different. The gift shop is the main source of funding that we have. And you have to realize in the early days Lucy only had 2,000 or 3,000 visitors a year— now we have 130,000 visitors a year.” Helfant said.
There’s a lot of history behind Lucy the Elephant, even dating back to the Prohibition Era, when rum runners used her eyes to signal green if it was OK to bring rum on shore and light her up red if it wasn’t. As time passes, however, another hurdle the old landmark is currently overcoming is a large restoration project to replace the exterior with new metal and wood. The restoration project has kept Lucy hidden behind scaffolding for the past 13 months.
Helfant hopes by fall 2023 Lucy will have all interior repairs completed as well as a new gift shop, an interpretive center for virtual tours and a public restroom facility.
None of this work could be completed without donations to Lucy. Donations have been made to Lucy in memory of loved ones or through fundraising events such as their benefit concert starring Frank Sinatra’s daughter Dina Martin in December.
“We realize not everybody can donate $1,000, and you know Lucy is a testament to that,” Helfant said, noting there have been plenty of “people who donate the nickels and the dimes and the dollars.”

Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Atlantic City was chosen the Best Food Court, Best Concert Venue and Best Place to See a Show in the 2022 Best of The Press contest.
Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Atlantic City offers more than what the name suggests, proving true by winning this year’s Best of The Press for its food and entertainment venues.
“Our Hard Rock Atlantic City team is composed of incredibly talented individuals who remain committed to delivering exceptional hospitality,” said Hard Rock Atlantic City’s Property President Anthony Faranca.
The property offers over 15 restaurant options in the casual- and fine-dining variety, the cultural and economic diversity appeals to those looking for a formal dinner or “a quick bite to eat before a show.”
Hard Rock’s concert venues see over 200,000 guests per year who come to see a variety of entertainers.
“We have live entertainment 365 days per year. This past year we have hosted performances by incredible legends such as Andrea Bocelli, Lionel Richie, Rod Stewart and Alicia Keys. We also feature the best comedy acts in the world including Dave Chappelle, Tom Segura, Bill Burr and Adam Sandler,” Faranca said.
With the rate of consumers visiting the property increasing, so does the popularity of the food and entertainment sectors of Hard Rock, earning the casino Best Food Court, Best Concert Venue and Best Place to See a Show. The only way to keep up with demand is through amazing employees, according to Faranca.
“These awards would not be possible, if not for our team members who embody our core mottos: “Love All — Serve All” and “Take Time To Be Kind” which continue to make Hard Rock Atlantic City the ultimate entertainment destination,” Faranca said.
In regards to the future, Hard Rock plans to continue to hold special events and shows for guests of all varieties to Atlantic City.
“We’re extremely proud to be recognized as the leader in the Atlantic City market and we will continue to raise the bar as we begin to plan for an exciting 2023 entertainment calendar,” Faranca said.
Since acquiring the business in 2020, Karl Kulakowski has prided himself in transforming Chico & Sons into an award-winning engaging restaurant selling quality sandwiches and takeout food.
“We specialize in specialty sandwiches,” Kulakowski said. “We invite celebrities from ‘The Sopranos’ and they make their own sandwiches in the shop, in their honor, we put them on a menu.”
Customers may be enticed to visit the restaurant by sandwiches called “The Vito” and “Tony’s Goomah,” but they stay because of the quality ingredients that set these sandwiches apart from the competition.
“It’s a quality that we provide, even during the pandemic, there was a crazy increase in prices, labor shortages and stuff, but we still didn’t settle for less,” Kulakowski said.
After winning Best of The Press last year, Kulakowski said the restaurant received record-breaking business as a result of the publicity. However his 14 employees were able to keep up with demand and still produce quality foods, earning Chico & Sons the award again this year, much to the delight of the owner.
“It means a lot. It’s the volume of people who are voting. And to be coming from nowhere and to become a gold winner, it means the world to us. I mean it’s not just me, it’s every member that is working with Chico that’s part of this big success,” Kulakowski said.
Kulakowski previously worked in many restaurants around the area, and enjoys what he does and the success of the business. Once the economy stabilizes, he hopes to expand the business to other locations. For now, he is focused on keeping this location as engaging as possible and continuing to bring buzz to the small South Jersey town.
“We actually have one event coming up on Halloween day with Young Henry from ‘Goodfellas’ and we have Eugene from Sopranos coming, so they’re going to make sandwiches as well. It’s gonna be a lot of fun.” Kulakowski said.

Inked in Eden tattoo artists include Gia Conte, left, Caliope Yiannos and Robb Wilson. Inked in Eden received Best of The Press gold awards for best tattoo shop and Yiannos was awarded best tattoo artist. Conte received a bronze award for best tattoo artist, while Wilson finished in the top five.
When Caliope Yiannos opened the doors of Inked In Eden to the public in April, she was pleasantly surprised by the massive success the business proved to be in less than six months.
Working with two other talented artists, they each complete one to four tattoos per day. The three stay booked solid due to their talent and rising popularity on social media, earning them this year’s Best of the Press for Best Tattoo Shop.
“We have a very long email list, and booking one month at a time just makes it easier on us so that if we need to change our schedule, we can and no one has to wait too long if they have to reschedule. But Tik Tok really helped us grow our clientele.” Yiannos said.
Yiannos, also voted this year’s Best Tattoo Artist, is passionate about the craft and loves the fact others walk around showcasing her art.
As a new business, the artists want to focus on getting their bearings in South Jersey, but look forward to branching out in the future.
“At some point I’m sure I’m gonna want to open a second shop, but right now I think it’s just making sure that me and my other two artists have a safe space to create artwork and work with clients.” Yiannos said. “And we’re hoping that we can travel around the country and even outside of the country doing guest spots and conventions and just really spreading our love for art.”
In the near future, Yionnas plans on bringing in guest tattoo artists to the shop in Ocean View as well as participating in the Philadelphia Tattoo Convention in January.
“I am just really thankful and grateful that we have such incredible clients that have been so supportive of me and my co-workers, and I’m so thankful for my co-workers — they are absolutely incredible people and artists. Really, we all push each other to do our best and we just love art. We love creating, we love being able to work with everyone in the community and all those who traveled from outside, to create incredible pieces,” Yiannos said.

Georgetti Construction was chosen this year’s Best of The Press gold award recipient for Best Home Renovation.
For over 30 years Georgetti Construction has been building houses catering to customers’ imaginations and expectations. Started by Scott Georgetti, the now family business is known for its quality construction, integrity and this year’s Best of The Press gold award for Best Home Renovation.
“We build houses from the ground up. We are custom, so we work directly with the owner to make their house exactly the way they wanted. We’re not afraid to make changes along the way, said Georgetti. “We’re all about transparency and honesty.”
The company works all over Atlantic and Cape May counties building residential and commercial properties, but is most popular with beachfront aspiring homeowners looking for custom-built homes or renovations along the shore.
The business started as a side gig for Georgetti after customers would personally request for services at a company at which he previously worked. He decided to give running his own company a shot, proving it was worth it three decades later. When Georgetti does retire, his children are looking forward to taking hold of the reigns.
“That’s probably the most exciting thing in our in life at this point, or at least in our business. Now they (Georgetti’s children and son-in-law are) being a big part of meeting with the customers, learning the things that I know, and you know what, they’re smarter than I am, they’re faster on the internet and those kinds of things. So they bring so much to the table.”
In addition to the next generation that’s going to keep this business going, another part of its success is due to the 15 employees. They not only get the job done but do it with the same integrity and care as Georgetti does, for which they are not only thanked but also rewarded through benefits and taking pride in the completed product.
“We bring all of our crew back through a house when it’s done with the homeowners’ permission, and everybody walks through and looks at how it actually finished because they may not have been there at all throughout the end,” Georgetti said. “So they get excited, and the owners are usually there and they’re thanking you and they’re saying how proud they are of their house and how many people stop and tell them, ‘Wow, this is amazing’,” Georgetti said.
This is the fifth year Georgetti Construction has won Best of The Press and they’re hoping for many more.
